Fathers¡¯ Marital Satisfaction and Children¡¯s Happiness: The Mediating Effect of the Father¡¯s Parenting Behavior and Children¡¯s Self-Esteem

Abstract
Objectives: This study examined the mediating effect of a father¡¯s parenting behavior (positive, negative) and children¡¯s self-esteem within the effect of the father¡¯s marital satisfaction on children¡¯s happiness.

Method: For the analysis, a sequential mediating model was applied using 1,050 data points from the 10th and 11th years of the Panel Study of Korean Children.

Results: The sequential mediating pathways for negative parenting behaviors and self-esteem were significant in the path of the father¡¯s marital satisfaction and children¡¯s happiness.

Conclusions: First, the father¡¯s marital satisfaction was a factor influencing children¡¯s happiness through various channels. Second, self-esteem was found to be the most powerful factor affecting happiness. Third, positive parenting behavior was shown to have a direct effect on children¡¯s happiness, while negative parenting behavior was shown to have an indirect effect through the child¡¯s self-esteem.
