Fathers’ Marital Satisfaction and Children’s Happiness: The Mediating Effect of the Father’s Parenting Behavior and Children’s Self-Esteem

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study examined the mediating effect of a father’s parenting behavior (positive, negative) and children’s self-esteem within the effect of the father’s marital satisfaction on children’s happiness.
Method: For the analysis, a sequential mediating model was applied using 1,050 data points from the 10th and 11th years of the Panel Study of Korean Children.
Results: The sequential mediating pathways for negative parenting behaviors and self-esteem were significant in the path of the father’s marital satisfaction and children’s happiness.
Conclusions: First, the father’s marital satisfaction was a factor influencing children’s happiness through various channels. Second, self-esteem was found to be the most powerful factor affecting happiness. Third, positive parenting behavior was shown to have a direct effect on children’s happiness, while negative parenting behavior was shown to have an indirect effect through the child’s self-esteem.
